How to Bulk Edit Shopify Without Spreadsheets (a Matrixify Alternative)

June 20, 2026 · 5 min read

The standard way to change a lot of Shopify products at once is the CSV round-trip: export a spreadsheet, edit it in Excel or Google Sheets, and re-import it. It works, but it is slow, easy to get wrong, and nerve-racking — one mismapped column or stray value and you have pushed a mistake to your live storefront with no easy way back.

There is a faster, safer way: describe the change in plain English, see exactly what will happen before it ships, and undo it in one click if anything is off. Here is how that workflow compares.

Why the spreadsheet round-trip hurts

  • It is indirect. You leave Shopify, wrangle a file, and come back. The data you are editing is a snapshot that may already be stale by the time you re-import.
  • It is error-prone. Column mappings, encoding, and formula mistakes are silent until they hit your store. A wrong decimal in a price column becomes a real, public mispricing.
  • There is no real preview. You do not see a field-by-field before/after — you just trust the import and hope.
  • Undo is a manual scramble. Reverting means reconstructing the old values from another export and re-importing again.

The plain-English alternative

Lasso is a Shopify bulk editor that skips the spreadsheet entirely. You type what you want — “raise all prices 10%”, “add the tag clearance to everything under $20”, “generate SEO descriptions for products missing them” — and Lasso resolves the matching products and stages a change for each one. Nothing touches your store yet.

Then you review a visual diff: a row-by-row before/after for every field that will change. Edit any row, drop ones you do not want, or apply just a subset. When it looks right, you click Apply — and every apply captures a snapshot, so one click reverts the whole batch if you change your mind.

Three steps instead of five

  • Say it. Plain English or a CSV drop — either way the scope is resolved for you, no manual product selection.
  • Review the diff. See precisely what changes before it ships, and trim or edit anything.
  • Apply with undo. Confirm, and keep the one-click revert in your back pocket.

Coming from Matrixify?

If you already live in CSV workflows, you do not have to abandon them — Lasso reads the same Matrixify-style format (NEW / UPDATE / MERGE / REPLACE / DELETE), so you can drop in an existing export and keep going. The difference is everything still stages for review with a diff and undo, instead of importing blind. See the full breakdown on the Lasso vs Matrixify page.

When spreadsheets still make sense

Exports are still great for reporting and for handing data to someone else — and Lasso exports to CSV scoped to any filter. The point is not that spreadsheets are bad; it is that editing your catalog through a round-trip is the wrong tool when you could change it directly, safely, and reversibly.
